Becoming a Member

The Gowensville Fire District is a combination fire department serving the Gowensville community and surrounding areas along the edge of South Carolina’s Dark Corner. Membership in the district is both a responsibility and a commitment to professionalism, teamwork, and service.

We welcome individuals who are motivated, dependable, and willing to uphold the mission, values, and standards of the Gowensville Fire District. Prior fire service experience is not required. Training and guidance are provided to qualified applicants.

Junior Firefighter Program

The Junior Firefighter Program is open to individuals ages 14–17 and is designed to introduce youth to the fire service in a safe, structured, and supervised environment. Junior members participate in training, education, and non-hazardous activities that promote teamwork, leadership, and community service.

Volunteer Membership

Volunteer membership is available to individuals 18 years of age and older. Volunteer members may serve in operational or support roles depending on qualifications, availability, and department needs. Volunteers play a vital role in district operations and community service.

Career Staff

Career members are employed by the district on both part and full-time basis and provide daily operational coverage, training support, station and apparatus maintenance, and emergency response. Career staff work alongside volunteers to ensure consistent service and readiness.

What Membership Involves

Membership in the Gowensville Fire District includes expectations related to training, participation, professionalism, and adherence to district policies. Requirements vary by membership type and role and are reviewed during the application and onboarding process.

All members are expected to:

Uphold the mission and values of the district
Maintain required training and certifications
Participate in department activities and training
Serve the community with integrity and professionalism

Training, Safety, and Readiness

The Gowensville Fire District places a strong emphasis on training, preparedness, and member safety. Training programs and fitness standards are established in accordance with district policy and applicable state and national guidelines.
